Everyone knows Mike Portnoy is no longer in the band . . . but I’m not ging to mention that! What I am going to mention is just how great this record is. Honesty, there isn’t a duff track on the whole CD. To my ears, it is their second best album – coming only just behind the sheer magnificence of Scenes From a Memory.
It’s heavy and very melodic all at the same time. It goes without saying that, musically, the band deliver on all levels. If anything, there is less ‘widdly’ than on previous records. However, there seems to be more keyboards, which is fine in my book!
Breaking All Illusions is phenomenal, but it is the shorter This Is The Life which is my favourite. And it happens to have John Petrucci’s best solo in years on it. Superb stuff. And Outcry is awesome, too.
I would also suggest that if you are a DT virgin, then this would make a great introduction to their music.
An oustanding album and, along with Opeth’s Heritage, must surely be competing for album of the year.
