Inside the Hurting (1994 MP3 Album)
2011 Remastered Digital Download Edition of this long deleted 4th album. 41 minutes of ELECTRONIC instrumental / progressive / melodic rock.
This album is entirely electronic from start to finish - there are no - repeat - there are no acoustic instruments whatsoever. Everything was performed on a synthesiser, except for the solos, which were perfomed using a MIDI Guitar! Note, too, that the entire album was written and recorded live to DAT in the space of some seven days.
As a result of the recording method, re-mastering this piece was very straight-forward and more or less amounted to simply topping and tailing the tracks and checking for any pops and clicks. I'm pleased to report that all went well and it sounds rather excellent, in a big synth-drum kind of way! Once again, Reaper was the DAW I used to assemble the album.
So, given all of the above, what's it like? Well, due to the electronic nature of the music, the drums and MIDI guitar, you will either love it or hate it. But . . . . it's worth sticking with: there are some really beautiful moments and the solo on the last track is simply staggering. For the year, playing that fast with a high degree of emotional content on a MIDI guitar was quite a challenge, but I think I pulled it off.
The first two songs are very upbeat and almost - but not quite - border-line dance! Don't let that put you off, though, as melodically and compositionally every piece on the album is very strong. The Return of Sorrow is an exceptionally moving track that builds to a great finale well worth sitting through nearly thriteen minutes for. Oh, and you're welcome to cringe when you hear the occasional orchestral stab!
