As will be obvious by now, I am a huge Ben Folds fan and the man returns with his first new album since the classic Rockin’ the Suburbs. First listen to this CD is not very promising, but repeated plays reveal an album of rare beauty and maturity. It’s resolutely downbeat throughout, but the melodies are simply gorgeous! The last 5 tracks are particularly marvelous with Jesusland from the first batch of songs being an earlier standout.

Instead of playing everything himself, this album see him working with a drummer and a bass player, who both provide sympathetic and excellent musical support to Ben’s trademark piano bashing.

If you’re quick off the mark, the first release of the album comes in a book type package with a 40 minute DVD featuring studio and live footage as well as interviews with the protagonists.

Recommended without reservations!
